There are conferences you attend… and there are conferences that stay with you long after the final session ends.

DisCon26 was one of those.

Over three unforgettable days at the Valley River Inn, Rotarians from across District 5110 came together to celebrate service, leadership, fellowship, learning, and impact. From the moment attendees walked into the beautifully prepared Conference space to the final Sunday reflections, the energy was inspiring, welcoming, and unmistakably Rotary.

Our conference theme challenged us to look deeper at what Rotary really is: “Take a Look, We’re More Than You Think…” And throughout the weekend, that message came alive again and again.

A Conference Filled With Energy and Purpose

The programs and activities showcased the incredible breadth of Rotary. Attendees participated in:

• A Walk to End Polio along the Willamette River
• Human trafficking awareness vigils
• Dedicating a Peace Pole at Alton Baker Park
• A hands-on service project filling backpacks for students
• Tours of Autzen Stadium, Hayward Field, and the University of Oregon facilities
• Fifteen breakout sessions covering everything from peacebuilding and membership growth to storytelling, fundraising, youth programs, and environmental stewardship

The breakout sessions were practical, thoughtful, and energizing. Rotarians exchanged ideas, challenged assumptions, and left with tools and inspiration to bring back to their clubs.

And then there were the speakers.

Simply put… wow.

Michael Angelo Caruso inspired us to communicate more effectively. Frank King blended humor and humanity in a powerful conversation about mental health. Dr. Pilar Bradshaw challenged us to think clearly and compassionately. Kelly Graves reminded us what intentional leadership and team culture can accomplish. Jennifer Jones had to Zoom in because of a family matter, but she inspired us with the power of Rotary storytelling and inclusion. Al Jubitz and Wyn Spiller lifted our eyes toward peacebuilding and Rotary’s global impact.

But for many of us, one of the most memorable moments of the conference came from Sylvia Whitlock — the first woman Rotary club president. Her story of perseverance, courage, and Rotary’s journey toward inclusion reminded us that progress is often driven by people willing to step forward, even when the path ahead is uncertain. Her presence was powerful, personal, and deeply inspiring.

Springfield Rotary, our host club, was simply phenomenal. Rae LaMarche, the Conference Chair, handled the inevitable hiccups with grace – wearing her superwoman cape because that’s what she was. The countless behind-the-scenes details reflected Rotary at its very best.

And behind her was an extraordinary team. Joelle Rankins Goodwin was the MC and the face of the Conference. Her warmth, humor, and organization kept us moving and right on time.

The organizing committee, dozens of volunteers, Valley River Inn staff, and the outstanding support team from Essig AV helped create an experience that felt polished, warm, and seamless from beginning to end. Their professionalism allowed the focus to remain where it belonged — on connection, inspiration, and service.

As your District Governor, I left this conference feeling grateful, energized, and proud.
