Francis Clifford Smith, believed to be the longest-serving inmate in U.S. history and one of the oldest people still serving a criminal sentence in America, has died at age 101 after spending more than 70 years under the supervision of Connecticut’s correctional system. Smith, whose case became known for repeated delays to his scheduled executions and longstanding questions about his murder conviction, died June 25 while living on supervised parole at a nursing facility in Rocky Hill, according to facility officials and the Connecticut Department of Correction, People reported.
