The festival celebrated the resilience and survival of Indigenous and Afro-Mexican cultures through vibrant music, dance and food.Intricately carved wooden masks with horns and detailed designs brought the danza de los diablos to life at La Guelaguetza festival in Hillsboro.Chinas Oaxaqueñas de Oregon, a group of Oaxacan women based in Eugene performed at La Guelaguetza.The weighty wooden masks, worn during the danza de los diablos, can be tiring to dance in, said Ricardo Sixto Gutiérrez.Dancers perform the jarabe del valle de San Antonino Castillo, a traditional Mexican folk dance style originating from the state of Oaxaca.The danza de los diablos masks are adorned long horns, honoring the African storytelling roots woven into the dance’s history.Dancers perform diablos de la costa (devils of the coast), a traditional Afro-Mexican dance originating from the Costa Chica region of Oaxaca, at La Guelaguetza.Dancers of all ages performed on Saturday, showcasing the variety of Oaxacan dance styles.Mask-maker and dancer Ricardo Sixto Gutiérrez crafts each cedar mask by hand, spending up to three weeks perfecting every detail.Dancers stomped and twirled time with live music, wearing goat-skin chivarras and carrying whips.A lively parade featuring dancers and musicians made its way around Shute Park, engaging festival attendees and showcasing the vibrant traditions of Oaxaca at La Guelaguetza.

Wearing heavy wooden masks with long curved horns and intricate designs resembling demons, witches and skeletons, dancers launched into a danza de los diablos (dance of the devils) in Shute Park on Saturday afternoon as onlookers gathered to watch.
