Description

SUTHERLIN, Ore. - A Sutherlin man died Tuesday morning following a collision involving two commerical log trucks on Fort McKay Road near Oakland. On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at approximately 3:14 a.m., deputies responded to the 1600-block of Fort McKay Road following a report of a serious motor vehicle crash. The preliminary investigation indicates that 37-year-old Tyler Hunt of Sutherlin was operating a 2025 Peterbilt truck westbound on Fort McKay Road when he encountered an eastbound 2025 Peterbilt log truck operated by 60-year-old Roy Way of Summerville, Oregon. Investigators determined that the trailer of Way's loaded log truck was traveling partially within the opposing lane of travel. As the trucks approached one another, Hunt was unable to avoid a collision and struck the loaded log trailer. Emergency personnel attempted lifesaving measures on Hunt; however, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Way was not injured in the crash and is cooperating with the investigation. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office Crash Reconstruction Team responded to document and investigate the collision. Investigators have obtained evidence as part of the ongoing investigation. The Oregon State Police is also assisting with the investigation. The circumstances that caused the log trailer to enter the opposing lane of travel remain under investigation. Both commercial vehicles were removed from the scene by A&S Towing. Assisting agencies include the Sutherlin Police Department, Oregon State Police, Sutherlin Fire Department, Umpqua Valley Ambulance and Douglas County Public Works.
