While investigators search for the why and how following the shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, some of the background of the shooter, 16-year old Griffin J. John II, has reached the Oregon Coast.  According to reports, his father and mother lived in Newport when they were first married, but it didn’t last long.  Court records show the two divorced in 2014 after five-years of marriage; however, they had been living apart since 2012, when the mother and her three-year old son moved to the Bend area.  The father, 47-year old Griffin J. John was contacted in the Astoria area recently.  He hadn’t seen his son in about a year and is considered homeless living in the woods outside of Astoria.  When the news of the shooting in Bend was told to him by Astoria Police officers, they say he seemed distraught.  John has had several run-ins with the law over the last nine-years for weapons violations and drugs.
