Participants in the annual Memorial Day ruck march fundraiser for Do Good Multnomah walk past a sober living shelter operated by the nonprofit. The Thayer Family Foundation Veterans Shelter opened last year.

Joel and Amber Oyama of Gresham got an early start observing Memorial Day. By 8 a.m. Monday, the couple had put on heavy backpacks and started a 12-mile walk through North Portland as part of a “ruck march” fundraiser for veterans services.
