Description

Waste Station 1

The Rotary Club of Newport is again playing a supporting role at Newport’s Seafood & Wine Festival in Newport this February 20-23.This festival is a February tradition since 1977 bringing 25,000+ attendees to the coastal town of 10,000. It’s a strategic economic boost to the local economy in a normally slow time for tourism. Newport Rotarians have frequently been involved in the festival since inception. Since the festival began again after COVID, the cleanup duties took on a different look and Newport Rotary took those on and renamed it the “Green Team” as the goal to divert as much waste as possible from the landfill. It fits perfectly into Rotary International’s 7th area of focus: the environment!

To keep the compost and recycling as “clean” of trash as possible, this requires a lot of volunteers – like 84 of them for the duration of the festival! Because it takes so much human power, Newport Rotary is asking for Green Team volunteers. For every shift, the volunteer receives $38 towards their non-profit/organization as well as each volunteer receives a FREE 3-day pass to the festival. We encourage our fellow Rotarians across the District as well as anyone who wants to raise money for their favorite organization (examples in the past have been: Habitat for Humanity, Grad Night, Food pantries, 60+ center, Surfrider, etc.) to sign up!

Last year, the waste was sorted into:
780 pounds of compostables
9,180 pounds of Glass Recycling
2,280 pounds of Cardboard Recycling
22 Bottledrop bags of beverage containers
5,800 pounds of trash
That translates to almost 70% of the waste being recycled!

Not only are there Oregon’s wineries and best seafood booths to sample from, but there’s a great music lineup as well. Check it out here: https://www.newportchamber.org/newport-seafood-wine-festival/

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS NEXT WEEK ON CHANDLER BRIDGE

Drivers can expect traffic delays on Oregon 241 (Coos River Highway) through the end of summer as a project to paint and repair the Chandler Bridge begins next week.

The bridge, located about three miles east of downtown Coos Bay, was built in 1952 and contains a lift span to allow maritime traffic to pass along the Coos River. The paint on the bridge is peeling and much of its surface is covered in rust.

This project will paint the steel truss section of the bridge, replace the lift-span tower ladders and access platforms, and upgrade the steel guardrail at each end of the bridge.

Starting Monday, Feb. 9, contractors plan to set up the work zone, mobilize equipment and install construction signs. For the next few weeks, drivers should watch for intermittent daytime lane closures with flaggers and brief delays.

Through most of the spring and summer, the bridge will be limited to a single lane of traffic 24/7. A temporary signal will provide traffic control.

Construction will also require two weekend closures of the bridge, probably in early summer. During the closures, traffic from the Allegany area will detour along East Bay Road to U.S. 101 north of McCullough Bridge. ODOT will provide public notification before any road closures.

All work is scheduled to be completed by Sept. 18. Prime contractor Abhe & Svoboda, Inc., based in Jordan, Minn., was awarded the project after a successful bid of $7,288,400.

For more information, visit the project website or contact ODOT Public Information Officer Dan Latham at 541-817-5200 or Dan.Latham@odot.oregon.gov.
