Compared to last season’s edition of the Portland Winterhawks, this one feels a little bit more conventional. Last year, scrambling to build a team in the first year of the NCAA-led changes, they had a team that was inexperienced but not young, wasn’t as dynamic as in year’s past, and wasn’t built for the present despite having a lot of players playing their final season (or expecting to). It was an odd fit, resulting in an 8th-place finish in the conference and going out of the playoffs in 4 games. Which, under the circumstances, wasn’t terrible in a now-12-team conference.
