IT'S TIME FOR THE 2026 SUMMER READING PROGRAM AT THE COOS BAY LIBRARY! Another school year has come and gone, which means it’s our favorite time of year at the library— the Summer Reading Program (SRP)! Our Youth Services Librarians have been hard at work for months lining up great performances, fun activities, and fabulous prizes to go with this year’s theme: Plant a Seed, Read! So, if you’re scratching your head over your summer schedule, read on for a sneak peek of some of the FREE entertainment we’re providing for this year’s festivities. Earlier that week on Tuesday, June 16, the Rainbow Dance Theater from Western Oregon University is bringing Code Can Dance to CBPL for two youth workshops and an evening performance open to the public. This unforgettable experience combines coding, dance, music, animation, and technology to create a showpiece using programmable LED costumes that light up and respond dynamically to movement. Using the Avatar Coder app, participants will create an animated dance sequence, visual effects, and interactive scenes while learning real computer science concepts such as sequencing, loops, variables, events, and problem solving. Students don’t just learn coding—they perform it! Young people in grades 3-6 are invited to sign up for the 2:30pm – 3:20pm class, while those in grades 7-12 are encouraged to sign up for a more advanced class from 3:30pm–4:20pm. At 6:30pm everyone is invited back to the library to watch the Rainbow Dance Theater and students perform using this amazing technology. At CBPL we love to clown around, and we’re thrilled to invite kids of all ages to join us for Mz. Pearl’s Circus Palooza traveling show from 2:00pm–3:00pm on Tuesday, June 30. On Thursday, July 9 at 10:00am kids aged 4-12 and their families are invited to the Myrtlewood Room to enjoy a special visit from the Charleston Marine Life Center’s Hunter Conn. One of the most hard-working animals on the planet, bees, will get their moment in the spotlight in a special presentation by the University of Oregon’s Museum of Natural and Cultural History on Wednesday, July 15 from 10:00am – 11:00am. Insect enthusiasts of all ages are invited to enjoy an hour of hands-on science fun with buzzworthy activities exploring the wonderful world of Oregon Bees. Learn about the over 500 species of bees we have in Oregon, including mason bees, cuckoo bees, mining bees, bumblebees, and the universally beloved honeybee!
