10/24/25 - Lane County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue assists several lost subjects, still searching for missing Oakridge man Lane County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue (SAR) continues to search for Jean Fritz Pierre Louis, 76, of Oakridge, who went missing early last week in the Salmon Creek area east of Oakridge. Yesterday, searchers rappelled into areas difficult to reach safely on foot and continued searching areas with dense vegetation. Linn County Sheriff’s SAR has also continued to assist with the search. However, searchers have also responded with deputies to several other lost subject calls. Many of the volunteers that assisted with these rescues responded despite already working all day on assignments searching for Louis. Please follow these tips to stay safe when you explore the outdoors in our county: ⛰️ Always tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return. 🌨️ Know conditions before you leave - rain in the valley can mean ice up high! 🏕️ Be prepared to stay out overnight - even if you don't plan to get out of your car. 🗺️ Bring maps for offline navigation - cell service can be spotty! 🌊 If you go on the water, ALWAYS wear a life jacket! On October 22nd at about 8 p.m., SAR responded to a report of an overdue mushroom picker in the McGowan Creek area east of Marcola who had not been heard from for about five hours. They searched until early morning from his last known location. Additional volunteers took over the search in the morning, and located the subject at about 10 a.m. They were able to assist him back to his vehicle. On October 23rd, at about 2 a.m., SAR responded to the area of Big River Road, south of Cottage Grove, for two lost mushroom pickers, one of whom was injured. A family member was in contact with them from across a canyon, but could not get to them. SAR personnel were able to locate the involved and assisted them back to their vehicles where they were checked by medics. At about 8 p.m., a passerby reported people yelling for a person at the Fern Ridge Wildlife Viewing Area west of Eugene. Deputies learned an adult male and a juvenile were overdue from a hike and did not have a phone. SAR responded, and located the involved about 3 hours later. The subjects were guided back to the parking lot. On October 24th at about 3 a.m., SAR responded to assist a female who had been left on the side of a road by her camping partner in the area of Big Creek Road, north of Minerva. Volunteers were able to locate the female two and a half hours later and transported her to Florence. Want to be a part of this amazing work? We are recruiting adult Search & Rescue volunteers!
