Description
Lots of questions about the traffic signs and markers on North Bayshore Dr., Coos Bay, and Tremont Ave., North Bend, basically Hwy. 101 near the Chip Pile. As part of the North Bend City Administrator's report to the City Council, the re-direction of traffic is explained: "Highway 101 at Newmark Sinkhole:" Staff continues to work with the Oregon Department of Transportation to address a sinkhole caused by a broken storm mainline. The City has no record of owning this system, which appears to be part of an older Weyerhaeuser (now Ko-Kwel) highway drainage network dating to or before 1945. The estimated repair cost is about $35,000 dollars, while full replacement of the system could cost approximately $1.3 million dollars. The City maintains that this system is not part of its infrastructure. (North Bend Strategic Plan: Policy Review; Financial Sustainability). Also, in the Public Works report - "Drainage Basin Cleaning: Crews are nearing completion of initial cleaning for all 1,200 City-maintained catch basins in preparation for the fall rainy season. With leaves falling, basin tops can clog within hours, so crews will continue this work through January. (North Bend Strategic Plan: Infrastructure Improvement; Public Safety). Ditch Maintenance: Crews cleaned 1,145 feet of ditches across 39 locations, removing 153 cubic yards of debris ahead of winter rains. (North Bend Strategic Plan: Infrastructure Improvement; Public Safety)."
