CITY COUNCIL UNANIMOUSLY PROCLAIMS JUNETEENTH 2025
At its June 17, 2025, meeting, the Coos Bay City Council unanimously approved a proclamation recognizing June 19, 2025, as Juneteenth in the City of Coos Bay. Councilor Troy Cribbins read the proclamation aloud during the meeting, honoring the historical significance of June 19, 1865—the day the last enslaved people in the United States learned of their freedom.
Later in the meeting, during the Council Comments agenda item, Councilor Cribbins reflected on the proclamation, stating:
"Tonight we made the proclamation for Juneteenth. And this is an amazing country, and it does have a large capacity to heal. And there's still opportunities, so many opportunities, for this country to be successful.
When we take a minute to step out and acknowledge a group like that, we're not sending them above or separate from anyone else. We're simply stating that this is a segment of our population that may have felt marginalized. And it's a welcoming sentiment to say there is room at the table for everyone… We are a great country, and we do have room—a seat at the table—for everyone."
Mayor Joe Benetti officially signed the proclamation, encouraging all Coos Bay residents to recommit to the ongoing work of equity, equality, and justice in celebration of freedom and unity.
