COMMUNITY NOTICE: COASTAL HIGH TIDES, POTENTIAL FLOODING RISKS, AND FREE SANDBAG PROGRAM Living near sea level in Coos Bay means we are no strangers to the water. We are a resilient coastal community, and a little high water is simply part of life on the Oregon Coast. As we head into this season’s high tides and winter storms, our local weather patterns are getting an extra push from an ocean climate phenomenon known as "Kelvin waves." These waves bring warmer, deeper water across the Pacific, which can temporarily push our normal high tides just a bit higher than usual. Adding to this, our upcoming winter King Tides—the highest seasonal tides of the year—will soon be rolling in. The combination of these massive natural tides, local storms, and Kelvin waves means our neighborhood streets and low-lying areas will likely experience more frequent and higher tidal flooding over the coming weeks. While there is no need for alarm, the City of Coos Bay wants to make sure every resident and business owner has the tools they need to stay dry and prepared. To help protect your property, the city is offering a free sandbag program for local residents: •Pick-Up Location: Fire Station at 450 Elrod Avenue •How to Get Your Sandbags: Bags are completely free, but you must call ahead to make arrangements for your pickup. •Contact Number: Please call 541-269-1191 before heading down to the station so the team can have them ready for you. Let's keep an eye on the tide tables, look out for our neighbors, and take a few quick steps to stay ahead of the weather. For more information or to arrange your sandbag pickup, give the Fire Station at 450 Elrod Avenue a call today. Stay safe, stay dry, and thank you for helping keep Coos Bay prepared!
