All southbound lanes of Interstate 5 through Portland will close at about 4:45 p.m. Thursday with traffic diverted onto southbound Interstate 405 and the Fremont Bridge.

Oregon Department of Transportation officials say a bridge joint on I-5 has failed and needs emergency repairs.

The I-5 lanes will remain closed until completion of the emergency work, which may last until midnight.
