Puma Tzoc, left, senior director of the Collective of Indigenous Interpreters of Oregon, and Malín Jimènez, right, associate director. Originally from Guatemala, Jimènez started volunteering as an Indigenous language interpreter as a teenager. She later worked in environmental advocacy but a friend convinced her to return to interpretation, saying, “Our community needs you.”

Puma Tzoc was living in New York a decade ago when a friend asked him to help a client who had spent three months in jail. The client spoke only K’iche’, an Indigenous language from his native Guatemala, and was in a legal purgatory — unable to understand his circumstances or argue his case.
