Description

Officer Rachel McDonald, a member of the Portland Police Bureau’s Behavioral Health Unit, works on a built-in laptop inside a police SUV in Portland on last spring. The unit, which pairs officers with mental health clinicians to respond to crisis calls and connect people with support services, attempted to help the man who allegedly crashed into the MAC with a car full of explosives last week.

The Portland Police Bureau’s highly specialized Behavioral Health Unit consists of five officer-clinician teams whose job it is to find and try to help people nearly everyone else is busy avoiding.
