Oregon's 53-year-old public meetings law requires elected officials to deliberate in public. When there are suspected meeting violations – as the Newberg School Board faced -- the Oregon Government Ethics Commission investigates.

Journalists breathed a sigh of relief back in 2023, when Oregon lawmakers passed a bill requiring public officials to do all their work in public.
