Mingus Park Pool: A Community Treasure Making Waves This Summer

As summer approaches, one of Coos Bay’s most cherished landmarks is once again ready to welcome families, friends, and future swimmers. The Mingus Park Pool isn’t just a place to cool off—it’s a cornerstone of community, a place where kids learn lifelong skills and families come together in the heart of our city.

If you’re looking for summer activities, swim lesson sign-ups for children are now open. These lessons begin in mid-June and cost just $45 per week, making them an affordable and invaluable investment in safety and confidence around water. Classes are designed for a wide range of ages and abilities, with morning and evening options to accommodate different schedules.

Also beginning in mid-June is the pool’s popular daily free swim program. From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday, anyone can enjoy the pool free of charge. It’s a wonderful opportunity for recreation and exercise, and a welcoming way for newcomers to get involved with the community.

At the heart of it all is Kathe McNutt, who has led the pool for nearly 50 years. Kathe’s dedication has shaped the Mingus Park Pool into more than just a facility—it’s become a place of mentorship, growth, and joy. Under her leadership, the pool has expanded its reach through school-based swim lessons that have become a staple in local education. Originally launched through a single teacher’s initiative, these lessons now ensure that nearly every Coos Bay student gains crucial water safety skills by the time they reach sixth grade.

The pool also reflects Kathe’s inclusive vision. It offers programming for children with special needs, lifeguard training for youth from across the region, and even free after-school swim options on early-release days. Her team collaborates with schools, families, and local organizations to ensure that no child is left behind when it comes to learning this essential skill.

In a town surrounded by rivers, lakes, and ocean, knowing how to swim isn’t just fun—it’s a matter of safety. Mingus Park Pool is a shining example of how a public facility, guided by passionate leadership and community support, can change lives for generations.

Let’s make this summer one to remember—at the pool that’s made memories for decades.
