On Monday, October 20th, HPD officers responded to a traffic crash on westbound Hwy 26 between SE Cornelius Pass Rd and NW 185th Ave, involving a motorcycle and several vehicles. Officers arrived and located the motorcycle rider in the roadway. The rider sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene. The Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART) responded to investigate the crash.

It is believed the motorcycle rider, Carlos Andres Marquez-Vargas (20) from Forest Grove, rear-ended another westbound vehicle causing him to lose control and become separated from his motorcycle. Marquez-Vargas was then struck by two westbound vehicles. The drivers of the vehicles involved remained on scene and are cooperating with the investigation. Speed is believed to be a contributing factor.

Westbound Hwy 26 was shut down for approximately 6 hours during the investigation, which is ongoing.

CART is a multi-agency team of specially trained law enforcement officers from the Sheriff's Office and the Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, and Tualatin Police Departments. The Washington County District Attorney's Office also has assigned Deputy District Attorneys to the team.
