Description
Portland Public Schools is releasing students two hours early Friday due to this week’s hot temperatures.
The announcement comes as the district says it’s been working all week to keep students cool and comfortable inside buildings that don’t have air conditioning.
According to the district, teachers and staff have opened windows, closed blinds to block any sunlight and adjusted room assignments. But despite their efforts they continue to see classrooms reach unsafe temperatures.
This combined with some students and staff members having experienced heat-related illnesses the district decided to release schools early.
Temperatures are expected to reach into the high 80s Friday as warm, dry weather continues to make its way through into the weekend.
Forecasters say temps could jump back up into the 90s starting as soon as Tuesday.
