Description
Alani Burkman, a Brookings-Harbor High School sophomore, is building a combination book shelf/bag storage unit for her room in a construction class. Burkman is also enthusiastically taking a class on small engines, helping to rebuild a Volkswagen Beetle and learning to weld. She thinks she might like to be a veterinarian technician or an agricultural teacher someday, but she values the life skills she is learning in her career and technical education courses.
"I don't like asking for help," she said. "I like being able to build my own stuff."
The Brookings-Harbor School District, like most districts around the state, has seen an impressive correlation between students' taking CTE courses and graduating.
