During Kindergarten Jumpstart at Vose Elementary School in Beaverton this month, kindergartners-to-be learned a three-step bathroom routine, took a music-and-movement “brain break,” listened to “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” explored children’s books and chose arts and crafts, play dough or a child-size play kitchen during their free time. Here, teacher Maria Surface goes over free play choices with her wiggly charges.

Several weeks before the official start of the coming school year, 18 kindergarteners-to-be wearing big-kid backpacks filed into Maria Surface’s snug, sunny classroom at Beaverton’s Vose Elementary School for a trial run.
